You doing a turkey trot next week?
Now I’m aware that most of the people who read this blog are in their early 20’s or even late teens, but hey, it’s never too early to start exercising, right? And this ARTICLE I just read only bolsters the research that shows exercise increases the chances of living a longer (and better quality) life. Of course we are all busy and tired at this time of the semester (at least I know I am), but maybe this is the perfect time to get to the gym and onto the treadmill, etc. Remember, that RESEARCH is also clear that exercise reduces stress levels as well. So, which turkey trot you’re doing…or what’s you go-to exercise regimen?

They say as long as you get at least 30 mins of exercise every day you will live longer. I will not be here for the turkey trot but I will be in going to the gym with my brother next week when I go and visit for thanksgiving. When I do exercise, I like to run on the treadmill or do workouts at home like squats, push ups, ab excercises, etc. Other than that I don’t really do heavy lifting like my brother does. But what I do is better than just laying in bed.
I exorcize fairly regularly. I’m in the Wyoming Army National Guard and am an older soldier so I cannot let the young’ns show me up too much. Due to my age I deal with stiff tendons and joints quite often. I have been on a new workout routine because of these issues. This coupled with diminished time for physical fitness due to work and family time, I tend to maximize all I can. I incorporate super sets into my routine. This helps me get the pump I want and the cardio I need. By including full range compound exorcises I wake up my old tendons. An example of one super set which typically is what I start the workout with is the following:
Squats 4 to 5 sets of 5 reps
Bench Press 4 to 5 sets with 8 to 12 reps
Lunges 4 to 5 sets with 15 to 20 reps
As they say motion is lotion. When you start to move your body starts to move better. Cheers!
This year I will not be doing the turkey trot because I will, unfortunately, be getting surgery the day prior to thanksgiving so I will be down for the count for a bit. My workout regimen is a bit limited due to the numerous medical issues I accrued throughout my time in the military. I can’t lift anything over 20lbs, was advised to run as little as possible, and to do absolutely no weight bearing exercises. This has limited me quite a bit, but I still try to do what I can. Typically (when I’m not told to avoid strenuous activity prior to and briefly post-surgery to avoid progression) I do a lot of the workout classes on campus. Since running is not advised, I try to do at least 3 of the cycling classes a week to get my cardio in. On top of that, I do yoga and Pilates both in and out of a class setting in order to maintain strength. I try to go on a lot of walks and then during the summers I do quite a bit of hiking, paddleboarding, rafting, and horseback riding. Though the hikes are not nearly as far or as rigorous as it was prior to the worsening of my conditions, it is still something! Over the last summer while working in Grand Teton National Park, I hiked nearly 200 miles with nearly 30,000 feet of elevation gain, so I try to do what I can. Thankfully, I got crafty and found that packing ultralight and taking my time to include many stops for stretching on my hikes has allowed me to still participate in something I love and get a good workout in despite my limitations!

I must admit I have let workouts fall to the wayside. I was pretty active in high school with workouts and sports, but when I got to college, I let most of that slip away as I focused on schoolwork. The fall and spring semesters are the worst for me since I am rushing to meet deadlines and whatnot, but I do find time in the winter and summer breaks to exercise. For me the best exercise is swimming. It’s low strain on your joints and allows me to work a lot of muscle groups simultaneously. Outside swimming I really enjoy hiking and so when the weather permits, I like to find time to go out south of Rawlins and hike. In the wintertime I also consider snow shoveling to be exercise and so factor that into my life. After reading this article, I’m thinking I should try and find time this thanksgiving to do a local turkey trot.
My main work out is doing yoga. Some days are more strenuous than others, but I also do it for my mental health, which to me is just as in need of health. I do yoga every day of the week. I am a very active homeschool mom, as well as being the homeless street outreach director at work so I get a lot of physical movement. My last at home kiddo and I participate in an online group called 1000 Hours Outside. Its a community of people dedicated to being outside walking, playing, learning moving our bodies out in the weather and it has been a game changer for us! I’m not in Laramie, but we are doing one in Rock Springs as an office team. Enjoy!
